I am typing this review with fingers that are currently blistering from the sheer friction of pure, unadulterated disappointment.
Let’s talk about the GAN 17 MagDrive. GANCube—the undisputed "Apple of Cubing"—decided that what the speedcubing community desperately needed in 2026 was not affordable innovation, but a $85 plastic paperweight. Eighty. Five. Dollars. For a 3x3. I could buy nine budget cubes that actually perform, a steak dinner, and a therapy session to figure out why I keep giving this company my money.
1. THE MAGNET OBSESSION HAS GONE TOO FAR
GAN proudly boasts that this thing has 196 magnets. ONE HUNDRED AND NINETY-SIX MAGNETS. Are you trying to build a speedcube or a miniature particle accelerator? There are magnets in the core, magnets in the edges, magnets in the corners, magnets in the stalks. If I walk too close to my refrigerator while holding this cube, I get aggressively dragged into the kitchen door.
They call it the "Celestial Magnetic-Dynamic System". I call it a glorified maraca. The moment you start turning this cube at any reasonable TPS (turns per second), it doesn't sound like a premium puzzle. It sounds like a plastic pill bottle filled with loose teeth. There is an incessant, metallic rattling noise inside the layers that makes me want to rip my ears off.
2. THE WEIGHT... MY POOR WRISTS
GAN used to brag about making cubes that felt lighter than air. The GAN 12? Featherweight. The GAN 15? 59 grams.
The GAN 17? Because they crammed two hundred pieces of metal into the plastic, this monstrosity weighs 72 grams! It turns your speedcubing session into a heavy-resistance wrist workout. I did a single average-of-12 and felt like I had just spent an hour lifting heavy machinery.
3. THE "AUTO-ALIGNMENT" INCEPTION
They hyped up this "MagDrive" tech, claiming the layers will practically solve themselves with omnidirectional auto-alignment. "It will never miss a turn," they said.
Let me tell you what actually happens: if your layer is even one millimeter out of alignment, the aggressive magnetic force grabs the cube and snaps it into place with the subtle gentleness of a mouse trap. It violently jerks the cube out of your hands, ruining your finger tricks and inducing minor panic attacks mid-solve.
4. 72 TUNING COMBINATIONS OF PURE HELL
Under the dual-locking center caps, you are greeted by a numerical tuning system featuring 72 different adjustment combinations. 12 tension gears! 6 center travel options! 3 magnet strengths!
Do you know what this means? It means you will spend four hours clicking little plastic gears with their dumb custom tool, trying to find the "perfect setup," only to realize that:
• Setting A makes the cube slower than cold molasses.
• Setting B turns it into an unstable, exploding pile of plastic shards that catches on every single corner.
VERDICT
If you want to spend premium luxury money just to hear a rattle, get hand cramps, and have your internal layers violently snap around like a haunted mechanical puzzle, look no further than the GAN 17 MagDrive at SpeedCubeShop or TheCubicle.
As for me? I’m going back to my 2-year-old cube that costs a fraction of the price. My wallet is crying, my ears are ringing, and my disappointment is immeasurable.

Great cube definitely the best I've ever owned but out of the box the cube felt very slippery but it faded quickly. Overall this cube is a great cube and is worth the money.
