GANCUBE’s Magnetic System

Delving into the core of speedcubing allows for an exploration of the full potential of GANCUBE’s core technology.

The magnetic system is a cool feature that puts magnets inside the cube. This makes the layers stick together when you turn the cube, thus helping you line them up faster.

2016 – Adhesive Magnetization Technology

When developing adhesive magnetization, the first generation of magnetic technology, we had to glue magnets inside each piece by hand to hold the cube together. This made the cube feel better and faster because the magnets helped the layers snap into place. But it was hard to do it right. Only a few cubers knew how to do it right.
Then in 2016, GAN356Air UM came out with this technology, and it was the first time that magnetic cubes were mass-produced for everyone. That’s when speedcubing really took off.

2017 – Positioning Magnetic Slot Technology

But after a while, people realized that gluing magnets inside the cube wasn’t such a great idea. The magnets didn’t have a fixed place to stay, so they would move around and mess up the alignment. And the glue would get weaker over time, and the magnets would fall off.
We didn’t waste any time and came up with a better way to use magnets in cubes. We made special slots for the magnets in the corner and edge pieces and glued them there to make them extra secure. This way, the magnets stayed in place and made the alignment super precise. We introduced this new feature in GAN356 Air SM in 2017.
The positioning magnetic slot technology further improves the precision of the magnetic force system.

2018 – Transparent Magnetic Capsule Technology

In 2018, GAN460 M came out with a cool new way to use magnets. They put them in clear capsules that you can see through and stuck them outside the core of the cube. This way, you can tell if a magnet is missing or not, and you can fix it easily if it falls off or goes missing.
The second-generation positioning magnetic slot technology was better, but sometimes it may still fall off by accidentally crushing. Sometimes you couldn’t tell from the exterior whether a component was missing a magnet or not. And if a magnet came loose, it was hard to find where it was supposed to go, and it may cause some noise.

Magnetic Intensity Adjustment Technology

More and more cubers started using magnetic cubes, but they didn’t all like the same kind of magnets. Some liked them strong, some liked them medium or weak. But the problem was, the magnets only came at one intensity, so not everyone was happy.

Cubers wanted a cube that could change how strong the magnets were. So we made the GAN356 X, the world’s first magnetic cube with a magnetic intensity adjustment system that lets you do just that. It had these patented components called magnetic slots and the instant magnetic capsule on each of the 12 edge pieces, and you could see and swap them out to make the magnets stronger or weaker at four gears.
Magnetic intensity adjustment technology was invented in 2018.

2019 – Second-Generation Magnetic Intensity Adjustment Technology

Cubers liked the first-generation magnet system, but it had some deficiencies. First, you had to swap out the 12 capsules every time you wanted to change the magnetic intensity. Second, you had to keep track of 36 extra capsules, and if you messed up one of them, the whole thing would go wrong.
The GAN356 X S is a newer and better cube that came out in 2019. It has a cool feature that lets you change how strong the magnets are by sliding a little switch with three gears. It also has eight clear capsules that hold the magnets and stick to the corners of the cube. These capsules make it easier and faster to adjust the magnets, and you don’t have to worry about swapping them out or losing them. It offers you at least 33% greater efficiency when adjusting the magnetic intensity than 356 X.
Magnetic intensity adjustment technology became a game-changer for magnetic speedcubing.

2020 – Omnidirectional Core Positioning Magnetic Technology

From 2016 to mid-2020, the magnetic system of cubes — despite multiple upgrades — can only be regarded as a single positioning system of inter-block magnets. Basically, magnets were just stuck on each piece of the cube, and they only worked by pulling each other together. But that wasn’t very good, because there weren’t enough magnets, and they were all over the place. So sometimes the cube felt too stiff, and sometimes it felt too loose. It was hard to get a smooth and consistent feel.
Something big happened. In September 2020, GAN came out with a new cube that blew everyone’s mind — the GAN11 M Pro. This cube was different from anything else because it had magnets not only in the pieces but also in the core. That means the cube had two ways of lining up the layers with magnets, from the inside and the outside. And it had a lot of magnets, like 64 of them, strategically placed all over the cube. So the cube felt super smooth and fast, and it always snapped into place perfectly.
Magnetic core and core positioning have initiated the next generation of magnetic cube technology.

2021-2022 – Magnetic Levitation Technology

If 2020 was the dawn of omnidirectional core positioning technology, the 2.0 iteration in 2021 was its zenith. GAN12 Maglev burst onto the scene with its magnetic levitation technology to deliver an experience like never before.
Do you know why some pieces of a cube seem to float in midair? Well, that’s because they have a special kind of magnet that can push and pull at the same time. When you turn the cube, the magnets push the layer away from the core and then pull it back when it’s aligned. This makes the cube feel super light and smooth and reduces the friction and stress on the cube.

In 2022, magnetic levitation technology was significantly upgraded in GAN13 Maglev. We placed 12 magnets on the edge pieces to enhance the repulsive force between magnets. Ever since then, having 88 magnets in the cube has become the new norm. It’s like the cube is surrounded by a magnetic force field that makes it feel awesome.
The invention of magnetic levitation technology achieves levitation effects like something out of science fiction. Drifting enchantment at 35 degrees and beyond is now made possible. The uses of this technology are arguably a work of art.
