GANCUBE’s Tension System

Delving into the core of speedcubing allows for an exploration of the full potential of GANCUBE’s core technology.

It refers to an adjustment system that allows cubers to customize the hand feel to their liking by tuning up the elasticity and travel distance, thus altering the tightness of the cubes and the degrees of corner-cutting.

2013 – Separate Tension system

Most cubes had a separate tension system before GAN3 came along. It consisted of a plastic core, screw, and spring. These were put together by embedding the screw and spring into the plastic core manually. This conventional technique, which relies entirely on visualization and sensation, is incapable of guaranteeing the verticality of the core, significantly affecting the accuracy of tuning.
To make things even worse, this process was not standardized. Adjusting the elasticity is done by modifying the length of the springs, which requires cubers to ensure that the lengths of the springs are consistent after trimming for someone without expertise in the matter.

Everything has changed with the launch of GAN3 in 2013 as it adopts the original Integrated Plastic Core design which greatly improves the verticality of the core and the accuracy of fine-tuning of elasticity. The innovative Nut-Adjustment Design also reduces the weight to 32% of a screw and makes the elastic adjustment more efficient and precise.

2015-2017 – GAN Elasticity System (GES)

The verticality is ensured, thanks to the Integrated Plastic Core. In the next step, GAN tries to achieve the precise tuning of elasticity and travel distance through standardization.
The GAN Elasticity System (GES) debuted in 2015 and kept improving over the next few years. Seven tension nuts were installed here to realize the standardization of tension tuning. In addition to the improvements mentioned earlier, we made further enhancements to the core. It now consists of a combination of metal and plastic, featuring a small bump on top that securely holds the nut in place. Furthermore, we upgraded the tension nut to enable the simultaneous tuning of travel distance and elasticity. Now, all you have to do is unscrew the old tension nut and replace it with a new one to complete the adjustment efficiently.
GAN’s fine-tuning tension system is a game-changer for the standardization trend in the cube world.

2018 – Numerical GAN Elasticity System (GES+)

The tension system keeps getting better and better. The advantage of using tension nuts is that they are interchangeable. However, the negative side to this is that you have to deal with 42 tiny pieces that are easy to lose and hard to change. As a result, you have to take out 6 tiny pieces and will be required to replace them with 6 new ones every time you want to try something different.

A revolutionary solution came out, and it is to make it numerical. Together with the numerical tension nuts, they constitute a whole new numerical GAN Elasticity System (GES+). This system is truly remarkable because the tension nuts display clear numbers indicating the level of travel distance. It can be easily and efficiently tuned by hand with a simple push and twist. The free combination of 4 levels of elasticity and 3 levels of travel distance provides 12 kinds of hand feels.

2019-2020 – GAN Elasticity System Pro (GES Pro)

GES+ pioneered the numerical tuning of the travel distance and received rave reviews from cubers. However, the elasticity still needs to be adjusted by replacing the tension nuts.

So we decided to go all out and make our best cube ever for 2019 – the GAN356 XS. It was a giant leap forward from anything we’ve done before. It features a GAN Elasticity System Pro (GES Pro) that lets you change how the cube feels. We were able to achieve three major improvements: the magnetic core, 6 levels of GAN Tension Nuts, and Numerical Variable Nuts. You can experience 6 levels of elasticity by adjusting one tension nut. With the 4 adjustable levels of travel distance, you can enjoy 24 different ways to customize your cube.
GES Pro is like a dream come true for the tension system.

2021-2023 – Magnetic GES

With the launch of GES Pro, where’s the next stage of the GES system? It’s numerical tuning? Yes, but GAN went to the stage far beyond numerical tuning. GAN brought the magnetic elasticity Maglev to the world.

These 2 features were integrated into the GAN Maglev2.0 Flagship – GAN13 Maglev. Its GES system uses 2 magnet rings instead of a traditional spring design. Magnets push against each other to create frictionless magnetic compression. It helps create a lighter and smoother turning feel and stores force efficiently.
Magnetic GES’ introduction opened limitless possibilities for magnetic repulsion and has become a game-changer for speedcubing.
